What Needs to Be Ready Before We Install Your Washer or Dryer

Most laundry installations take under an hour. The ones that don’t almost always fail for the same reason: the space wasn’t finished. The outlet is the wrong type, the vent was never run, or the water lines stop at the basement wall three metres from where the washer is supposed to sit.

We install into a ready laundry space. That means we connect, level, test and start your machines — we don’t run new electrical circuits, cut vent openings through walls, or extend plumbing to a room that doesn’t have it. This guide explains exactly what “ready” means, so your install happens in one visit instead of two.

What we install and what falls outside the job

We install electric laundry appliances only. We do not connect gas dryers, and we don’t take on the trades work that prepares a laundry space — electrical, ducting, or plumbing runs.

Which laundry setup do you have?

Four configurations cover almost every Manitoba home, and each has its own requirements. Knowing which one you’re dealing with tells you what to check.

Washer and dryer side by side

The most common setup and the most forgiving. You need two separate receptacles — one standard for the washer, one 240-volt for an electric dryer — plus water, drain and a vent. Allow clearance behind both machines for hoses and ducting; pushing a machine flush to the wall crushes the vent and is one of the most common causes of poor drying.

Stacked washer and dryer

Stacking saves floor space but adds one hard requirement: the stacking kit has to be the manufacturer’s kit for your exact pair. Kits are not universal, and stacking two machines that were never designed to stack is a safety problem, not a shortcut. Front-load machines can stack; top-load machines cannot. Stacked installs also need enough vertical clearance to open the upper door fully.

All-in-one washer-dryer combo

One drum that washes and dries. These are ventless, which is exactly why people choose them for condos and basements with no exterior wall. They run on a standard household outlet, need hot and cold water and a drain, and no duct at all. Drying cycles run considerably longer than a separate dryer — that’s normal for the design, not a fault.

Compact 24-inch units

Common in condos, apartments and older Winnipeg homes with tight laundry closets. Measure the opening before delivery, including the door swing and the depth once hoses are attached. A 24-inch machine still needs several inches of clearance behind it, and closet installations need ventilation openings so the dryer isn’t recirculating its own hot air.

Electrical: where 240 volts comes in

Your washer runs on a standard 120-volt household outlet. An electric dryer needs a dedicated 240-volt receptacle — a different shape and size from anything else in your home, usually located directly behind where the dryer sits.

Canadian homes are wired at 120/240 volts, so both are available from the same panel; a 240-volt circuit simply uses two supply conductors instead of one. What matters for your install is whether that circuit already exists at the laundry location and what the receptacle looks like.

  • Four-prong receptacles are the current standard for electric dryers.
  • Three-prong receptacles appear in older homes. A dryer’s cord has to match the receptacle it’s plugged into — cords are sold separately for this reason, and we can fit the correct one.
  • Ventless heat pump dryers are the exception: many run on a standard 120-volt outlet and need no 240-volt circuit at all. If you’re replacing a conventional dryer with one of these, check the requirement before you buy rather than after.

If there’s no dryer receptacle at the location, or the existing circuit doesn’t match the machine, that’s electrical work and needs a licensed electrician before we can complete the install.

Water supply and drain

A washer needs hot and cold shut-off valves within reach of its inlet hoses, and a drain it can actually pump to.

The valves matter more than people expect. In older Winnipeg homes we regularly find valves that haven’t been turned in fifteen years and either seize or start weeping the moment they’re moved. If yours haven’t been touched in a long time, test them before delivery day, while there’s still time to have them replaced.

How high should the drain standpipe be?

There is no single number, and anyone who gives you one is oversimplifying. Manufacturers publish different minimums — some specify around 30 inches from the floor, others closer to 39 — and plumbing codes measure from the trap rather than the floor, which produces different figures again. Most manufacturers agree on a maximum near 96 inches, because a washer’s pump can only lift water so far.

What to orient by, in this order:

  1. The installation manual for your specific model. It gives the exact minimum and maximum for that machine, and it is the figure that governs your warranty.
  2. The underlying principle, if you don’t have the manual. The top of the standpipe must sit above the flood level of the washer’s tub. Below that, the machine siphons water out as fast as it fills and never completes a cycle.
  3. The upper limit. Beyond roughly eight feet, the pump can’t clear the drum and water is left standing at the end of the cycle.

A laundry tub works as a drain point too, provided it meets the same height requirement. If your drain sits outside the workable range, that’s a plumbing change rather than something adjustable at install time.

Two more things worth doing while the machine is out from the wall. Replace rubber inlet hoses with braided stainless steel — a burst supply hose is one of the more expensive things that can happen in a house, and it accounts for a good share of the calls we take about a washing machine leaking water. And if you’re on a private well, mineral deposits clog inlet valve screens far faster than they do on city water, so hard water damage to appliances in southeastern Manitoba is worth building into your maintenance schedule from day one.

Venting the dryer

A conventional electric dryer has to exhaust outside. It cannot vent into a basement, a crawlspace or an attic — that’s a moisture and fire problem, not a compromise.

The duct needs to already run from the laundry location to an exterior wall with a proper termination hood. Cutting that opening and running new duct is renovation work and sits outside what we do. What we handle is the connection between your dryer and the duct that’s there.

What to check on an existing vent:

  • Material. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Plastic and thin foil accordion hose are not acceptable — they sag, trap lint and are a known fire risk.
  • Length and bends. Every elbow adds resistance. A long run with several turns will make a healthy dryer look broken, and is a frequent reason people book dryer repair in Winnipeg for a machine that turns out to be fine.
  • The exterior flap. Go outside while the dryer runs. If the flap barely lifts, the duct is restricted somewhere along its length.
  • Crushing. The most common fault we find. The machine gets pushed back tight to the wall and folds the duct flat behind it.

If you’d rather not deal with venting at all, a ventless heat pump dryer or an all-in-one combo removes the requirement entirely — but adds a condensate drain or reservoir instead.

Floor, space and access

A washer full of water is heavy, and a front-loader on spin generates real force. The floor has to be solid and reasonably level. A machine that isn’t level will vibrate, walk across the room and wear its bearings out years early — which is why a washer making loud noise during the spin cycle so often traces back to the installation rather than a failed part, and why it’s worth getting right before it becomes a washer repair job.

Before delivery day, check the route as well as the room. Doorway widths, stair turns and basement landings are where deliveries get stuck. Measure the narrowest point on the path, not just the laundry room itself.

What we see on service calls

After years of laundry installs across Winnipeg, Steinbach, Lorette, Landmark, Oak Bank and Ste Anne, the same handful of situations account for nearly every job we can’t finish in one visit.

  • No dryer receptacle. The homeowner had a gas dryer, bought an electric replacement, and there was never a 240-volt circuit in that room.
  • The wrong stacking kit. Generic, bought sight-unseen, doesn’t fit the pair. Two machines, nowhere to put the second one.
  • Water stops at the basement wall. The plan was to move laundry upstairs. Nobody ran the plumbing.
  • Shipping bolts still in. On a self-install, this is the single most common mistake. Front-load washers ship with bolts locking the drum, and running a cycle with them in place damages the suspension.
  • Vent duct that goes nowhere. Terminates in the joist space, or into a wall cavity. Not visible until the machine comes out.
  • Seized shut-off valves. Discovered at the worst possible moment — with the old machine disconnected and water running.

None of these are exotic. All of them are visible in advance if you look.

Pre-install checklist

  1. Standard outlet at the washer location, and a matching 240-volt receptacle for an electric dryer
  2. Hot and cold shut-off valves that open and close without weeping
  3. A standpipe, floor drain or laundry tub within the range your manual specifies
  4. Metal vent duct running to an exterior termination, unless the dryer is ventless
  5. The manufacturer’s stacking kit for your exact pair, if stacking
  6. Level, solid floor with clearance behind the machines
  7. A clear path to the laundry room — measured at its narrowest point
  8. The old machines disconnected and moved out, if you’re handling removal yourself

If everything on that list is in place, your install is a single short visit. If something is missing, knowing now means you can arrange the trades work before your new machines are sitting in the middle of the room. Frequently asked questions

Do you install gas dryers?

No. We install electric laundry appliances only. Gas connections require a licensed gas fitter.

Can you run a new outlet or vent for my laundry room?

No. We connect appliances to services that already exist. New circuits are electrician work, and cutting a vent opening through an exterior wall is renovation work. Once those are in place, we handle everything from there. The same boundary applies to our other installation work, including dishwasher installation in Winnipeg.

My laundry is moving from the basement to the main floor. Can you connect it?

Only once water, drain, electrical and venting have been brought to the new location. Moving a laundry room is a plumbing and electrical project; the appliance install is the last step of it, not the whole job.

Can any washer and dryer be stacked?

No. Both machines must be front-loading, they must be a compatible pair, and you need the manufacturer’s stacking kit made for those models. Top-load machines can’t be stacked at all.

Do I really need to remove the shipping bolts?

Yes, before the first cycle. They lock the drum for transport. Running the machine with them installed can damage the suspension and drum bearings, and that damage isn’t covered by warranty.

What’s the difference between a vented and a ventless dryer?

A vented dryer pushes hot moist air outside through a duct. A ventless dryer condenses that moisture and drains it away or collects it in a reservoir, so no duct is needed. Ventless models often run on a standard household outlet and take longer per load. If your space has no exterior wall, ventless is usually the only option.

How long does a laundry installation take?

Under an hour for a straightforward side-by-side install into a prepared space. Stacking adds time. If something on the checklist above is missing, the visit stops until it’s resolved — which is exactly what this guide is meant to prevent.
